Walking to Improve Your Health and Waistline

Walking is an activity for almost everyone. The great thing about walking is that it is easy, free and requires no specialized equipment.  A brisk walk alone or in a group has a host of health benefits including trimming your waistline.

Some Health benefits of a regular brisk walking routine:

  • Improve your mood 1
  • Maintain a healthy weight and even lose weight
  • Prevent/Improve heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes 2

A simple walking program does not need to be complicated. Consider walking with friends and varying your routine. Don’t let bad weather get in your way. Many local malls open their doors early for walkers. It is recommended by the CDC to get 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity aerobic activity like brisk walking.

Choosing the right gear is important to prevent injury. Look for shoes with proper arch support and a thick sole to cushion your feet. If you are an all weather walker, make sure you have comfortable clothes to keep you safe from the elements. Definitely wear a hat that protects your face from sun damage and use sunscreen no matter the weather.
